A place of soothing comfort and conversation where one may find solace. Think of this as the enchanted purr of a cait sidhe...Blessed Be!

Samhain Afternoon 2018
'Tis a chill, rainy afternoon here at the Lair as the Veil thins in preparation for tonight's reunions and visitations. As I gaze without, the stark blackness of a gnarled skeleton of a tree bedecked with bright golden leaves stands out against the muted gray of the stormy sky. All else is illumined in a quiet, dull light save that lustrous tree. It's as if that one, solitary tree has forgotten the day...the weather...and its own slow descent into dormancy.
Amidst the quiet contemplation this day demands, may we be one with that riotous tree--celebratory, mindless of the coming quiescence, and embracing of living life out loud. Truly, Samhain is a reunion celebration with those behind the Veil! Greet the Old Ones in love and light and joy for their shared wisdom and blessing!
May tonight bring each and every one of you joy and focus and peace. May the Old Ones smile upon you. And, may She grace you with plenteous stores for the coming Dark Days.
In the Softness of the Moonlight...
’Tis night for revel, set apart
To reillume the darkened heart,
And rout the hosts of dole.
’Tis night when Goblin, Elf, and Fay,
Come dancing in their best array,
To prank and royster on their way,
And ease the troubled soul.

The Wheel Turns Once Again...
Greetings my darling Lair visitors. 'Tis nearly a year since last I posted and, in that time, much has happened. I've had my office relocate to a new building--a building with a WINDOW where I can see the seasonal changes and all the beauty that She bedecks Herself in with each Sabbat and Cross-Quarter celebration. We've a new inhabitant at the Lair proper--a housemate with respect for and knowledge of the Old Ways (though not a practitioner).
The "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" is truly upon us. As I glance behind me at the trees without, I note they're beginning to gild themselves in the burnt golds and russets of Autumn. V-shaped formations of wildfowl cut across the skies as the birds make their pilgrimage to their winter grounds. Woodland squirrels are glutting themselves on newly-ripe pecans and late-season berries as they prepare for the derth of winter. The sky itself has started softening from the lush cornflower of midsummer to the quieter powder blue of this season.
Neighborhoods are far from immune from observing the seasonal delights! Houses are decked in bales of hay, chrysanthemums, and all manner of autumnal wreathes and garlands. Pumpkins and gourds of all shapes and sizes now grace entryways and town squares as the Season is welcomed and celebrated by Pagan and Christian, Jew and Muslim, Believer and Atheist alike. Neighbors pause a bit longer to share pleasantries. The scent of wood smoke wafts across the chill breezes--beckoning us to gather 'round the hearth or firepit and share quieter times.
Amidst the chaos and tragedies the temporal world suffers through seemingly daily, we need all the more to open to the warmth of the shortening sunlight, the songs and silences of the Season, and the softness of the ever-present Moonlight. She sustains our hope in the constancy of Her ages. As Rilke observed, "...you must not be frightened if a sadness rises up before you larger than any you have ever seen; if a restiveness, like light and cloudshadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening with you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall."
My dear ones, may the coming Samhain bless you with renewed faith in the strength of today and the hope of tomorrow. And, may you, my darlings, ever be embraced by the Softness of the Moonlight...

The Chill of Autumn has Arrived...
But, now, my darlings, the Spirit of our blessed season of mists and shadows has embraced the lands of the Lair. Yesterday brought the softened light of an overcast sky and the cooling winds of a shift of focus. Today, a chill rain is soaking the dormant ground. The world is quiet...preparing for its hibernation...preparing for the Darkness.
My dearest ones, we need--as always--embrace the Darkness and mists. They open our inward eye to the promise and the beauty of our world even in the absence of our Maiden. These are the times of introspection...of self-discovery...of quiet contemplation. These are the times of welcoming hearth fires, of simmering kettles and cauldrons, of fresh-from-the-oven breads and cakes, of familial warmth. It's the coming home--regardless of what "home" means to you and yours. This is our preparatory moment.
As the Wheel turns ever-onward, be mindful of the thin Veil surrounding us and allow yourself to be open to the Wisdom beyond...the wisdom just 'round that next shadow or wrapped in that bit of brume. Listen to them...can't you hear the whisper of the ages in each chill breeze and leaf-fall?
While composing today's reflection, I ran across this excerpt from "Samhain" by Annie Finch. I find it reaffirms that which has just been stated. I hope you enjoy it...
Now when dying grasses veil
earth from the sky in one last pale
wave, as autumn dies to bring
winter back, and then the spring,
we who die ourselves can peel
back another kind of veil
that hangs among us like thick smoke.
Tonight at last I feel it shake.
I feel the nights stretching away
thousands long behind the days
till they reach the darkness where
all of me is ancestor.
I move my hand and feel a touch
move with me, and when I brush
my own mind across another,
I am with my mother's mother.
Sure as footsteps in my waiting
self, I find her, and she brings
arms that carry answers for me,
intimate, a waiting bounty.

Different Spaces...Different Faces...
In the past three weeks, I've traveled to two separate states and have lost myself to the beauty and mystery which always seems to gather 'round me. I hadn't realized how deeply entrenched I've become in the "everyday-ness" of my Visitors from the Veil. Between my beloved Cottage Fae (pranksters though they are), my Visitors, and the natural world's personable critters, I'm truly never really alone. Fancy that!...a Solitary who's never in perfect solitude.
In our humdrum daily lives, how many times are we graced with the presence of the Others? How many "unexplainable" moments of grace or visions of beauty would be lost were they not there to guide us to the sights and experiences that so many outside our world simply take as happenstance? The pure warmth of the Others (Visitors, Fae, etc) gently embracing us and--if we're lucky enough to know and encourage their presence--guiding us toward the magickal wonderment around us is astounding.
Thanks to the Others, others of our Path are oftimes revealed. Those revelations are the most precious for the trust that the Others put on us to embrace and cast a protective veil of silken compassion around those whose hearts are interconnected to our own. That, my dearest ones, is what our Path ought be--one of compassion, mutuality, and gentle love--as we're shown with every turn of the Wheel...with every Moonrise...with every soft mist or gentle breeze or quiet whisper of Her existence in every breath we take.
My darling ones, look to the shadows, listen to the silences, and feel the wonderment envelop you in its splendor. And, thank them.

Quandry...
I was, once again, faced with a quandry whether to be "totally" out as a Solitary or to acquiesce to societal norms. My habit, for the past twenty-three years (since I discovered this Path and came to terms with my personal beliefs), has been to "blend" in in deference to our rule to "Harm None" (myself included). Perhaps, to some of you, this will come across as deceptive. I think not.
Would it not be a worse offence to risk alienating or distancing relationships? The "Harm" would be done and there is the potential, thanks to preconceptions that we must deal with daily, understanding would not be forthcoming. Thus, "Harm" would continue.
It's a personal decision, understandably, and not for everyone, to live pseudo-broom closeted in certain situations...but it maintains an equilibrium. Perhaps it's fear that keeps the Lair relatively private...but it's that very privacy which nurtures my little Solitary life. The scent of the seasons, the warmth of the Sun, the loving shadows cast nightly by the Moonglow...these are individual enjoyments that connect me to Her and to our interwoven Path.
Truly, dear ones, this was merely a "vent"...a quick blog to collect my thoughts and feel your presence in this topsy-turvy world. Thank you, my pets...your existence enriches and encourages.

Leap Day Magick
Today is Leap Day...a day outside of time in a manner. It's not the Wheel, yet it resets the Wheel. It's a day of limitless possibility, for who can limit that which is outside of the constraints of normal time? As with the day, who ought constrain themselves on this auspicious day?!
What are you intentions, my dear ones? What wonders will you allow to unfold or magick to flow unchecked today? What delights will be yours on this transformative day?
Go outside...inhale the intoxicating scents of our Lady as she bedecks herself for the coming Season of Renewal! Embrace the sunbeams glittering through the mists of early morning...the blush of early petals on the trees...the tentative chirrup of the returning songbirds. Know that She is just beyond the horizon. Spring is nearly upon us and this, Leap Day, is a day of potential and anticipation.

Reflections in this New Reality
I'm reminded of a verse by Wm. Wordsworth--
The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers;—
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not. Great God! I’d rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.
For those of us who empathize "too deeply," the past five days have been utterly exhausting to the emotions and the mind. Negativity and fear-mongering reign on social media and in the news...hatred and bloodshed and pain prevail in areas recently healed or formerly peaceful...confusion is everywhere. Lives are lost, shattered, permanently altered, and yet we are at the periphery--spectators to the living drama unfolding all around us.
This morning, I was awakened by tornado sirens. The skies themselves were boiling with anger and unchecked horrors. As the storms swept past, the rains poured down, and the winds ultimately calmed, She gave us our answer to the confusion. This current storm is in its infancy, but it's ephemeral. It will not last. We ARE "Pagans suckled in a creed outworn" and we DO "Have glimpses that would make [us] less forlorn" and we must not lose sight of that. We must banish the negativity--even if only in ourselves. Mend the broken, be they hearts, relations, or understandings.
Our overarching rule is, regardless of Path, to do no harm. To me, at least, that means we must help those harmed to heal. There are a LOT of folk out there who haven't a warm Lair to enter...who haven't encouragement and concern given them...who haven't hope. They don't understand us (and many still fear us for no logical reason), but they need us. They need our strength, our compassion, and our empathy...and, for them, we may be the only open heart they find.
Be the light, my loves. Be the soft Moonlight in your lives. Be the tenderness and compassion and understanding. Be that which our very nature and belief charges us to be!

The Greening of the Year
'Tis come again, my darling ones. She has taken on her Spring maiden's mantle and is shyly returning from her Winter's rest. Can't you feel the gentle touch of warmth kissing your skin? the anticipatory hush of the breezes whispering in your ear? the cloying scent of blossoms perfuming the air?
Embrace the increasing beauty...the possibility...the silent life.

Focus and Illumination in the Dark Half
These are the weeks and months we internalize--both literally and figuratively. In our daily lives, we hunker down in our homes to "protect" from the chills of the ever-encroaching Winter. Blankets and sweaters are brought out of storage. Savory spices replace sun-kissed herbs in our recipes (and in the scents with which we choose to surround ourselves). Kitchen witchery is at the foreground of our minds.
Within ourselves, a similar "protection" is ongoing. The texts and traditions with which we are so familiar and around which are days are organized call us to return to study. Our "sunshine" selves--so complacent in our out-of-doors activities throughout the warmer months--shift focus once again to reconnections and renewal. Growth happens in the Darkness for the Dark Half nurtures the curiosity within. We reevaluate what is good and what is past its prime...and allow our minds to travel paths of curiosity. This is the "safe" time, for we've been graced by those who've gone before, yet are not gone.
The Old Ones have visited, have graced us once more with their felt presence among us. 'Tis the Season of reflection upon what wisdom they bestowed on the hallowed Dark Night. What is being revealed to you since that Night of the Veil's Thinning? What studies are you beginning or delving into further? What intrigues call your focus away from the mundane? What connections are you being opened to? Revelation is afoot!
Be vigilant and curious and brave, my little ones. Embrace the chill...celebrate the Darkness...and be your own illumination!

Disquiet
It's past midnight.
The mortal inhabitants of the Lair are at rest 'cept its Mistress--me. The energies of the past day are too much with me, clinging desperately to my spirit and denying it peace. Try as I might, I simply am incapable of silencing the negativity...the pall of foreboding which has settled over my frame...the tension which bade me rise and write it into silence.
A trust was broken today (*no...not with my beloved, so quit that). Nearly everything was recovered/reclaimed and that which was not was of little value...but that's not the issue. The gnawing pain is that it happened at all and that the "confessional" was more a bandage than a beginning of a curative or display of true remorse for the actions...and an accidental admission that this hadn't been a first violation of my private space.
Life went on. I should do as my darling and let it go...move forward...start afresh. He saw my pain. He knows I'm hurting. He dealt with the breach in my stead as he knew I had been rendered virtually incapable of thought by the blow. He got the "confession" to occur from the parties.
It should be enough.
I want it to be enough.
I'm not certain it is enough.
So...here I sit in the restorative silence of the Lair--fur-babies sleeping their puppy-sleeps, crickets and Toads singing in the heavy Summer darkness outside, and my beloved rumbling his calming snore from our bedroom. Willing my brain to quiet...willing my nerves to soothe...willing sleep to come.
This full Moon was one which heightened emotions. At least I know I'm attuned.

Dancing at Beltane 2014
Tra la! It's May!
The lusty month of May!
That lovely month when ev'ryone goes
Blissfully astray.
Tra la! It's here!
That shocking time of year
When tons of wicked little thoughts
Merrily appear!
It's May! It's May!
That gorgeous holiday
When ev'ry maiden prays that her lad
Will be a cad!
It's mad! It's gay!
A libelous display!
Those dreary vows that ev'ryone takes,
Ev'ryone breaks.
Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes
The lusty month of May!
Whence this fragrance wafting through the air?
What sweet feelings does its scent transmute?
Whence this perfume floating ev'rywhere?
Don't you know it's that dear forbidden fruit!
Tra la la la la! That dear forbidden fruit!
Tra la la la la!
Tra la! It's May!
The lusty month of May!
That darling month when ev'ryone throws
Self-control away.
It's time to do
A wretched thing or two,
And try to make each precious day
One you'll always rue!
It's May! It's May!
The month of "yes you may,"
The time for ev'ry frivolous whim,
Proper or "im."
It's wild! It's gay!
A blot in ev'ry way.
The birds and bees with all of their vast
Amorous past
Gaze at the human race aghast,
The lusty month of May.
Tra la! It's May!
The lusty month of May!
That lovely month when ev'ryone goes
Blissfully astray.
Tra la! It's here!
That shocking time of year
When tons of wicked little thoughts
Merrily appear.
It's May! It's May!
The month of great dismay.
When all the world is brimming with fun,
Wholesome or "un."
It's mad! It's gay!
A libelous display!
Those dreary vows that ev'ryone takes,
Ev'ryone breaks.
Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes
The lusty month of May!

The Wheel Turns Once More
With that in mind, it is with heavy heart that I posted the following to my Facebook on Monday--
Our beloved Mollie crossed over the Rainbow Bridge this morning. No longer is she battling or in pain due to the very assertive cancer that's been attacking her. She's now forever in her happy sunbeam beneath the roses...forever chasing her toads...forever in our hearts with those soulful eyes, those velvet ears, and that knowing look.
We love you...we miss you...but you are finally at peace.
That was Monday morning. I was devastated and still am to a degree, though I know she's not suffering any longer and that our other two fur-kids (one of whom is her littermate) are able to get rest and recharge after watching over her this past month.
Monday evening, I heard them...the "rusty gate" call from the Pond. Now, Mollie and I would go out every evening in Spring and Summer and "go toadin'" once we heard the first songs--finding our Toads and "herding" them to the Pond. I heard them that night for the first time this season. I heard them and the other two pups heard them...and I took the remaining two outside.
The Toads had returned to the Pond...about seven of them...and they were singing at the top of their lungs. They were singing our sweet Mollie home.

Here, in north Texas, we're in a transitional period. 'Tis not quite Spring and not exactly Winter. Nights are chill, but the sunny embrace of the ever-lengthening days bring the promise of renewal and growth. Songbirds who've been wintering in Southern climes have begun returning to the Gardens and meadows...the bunnies and squirrels are actively seeking mates and frolicking recklessly in yards and along woodlands...and the Toads have returned to our Pond.
In the spirit of this transition, the Garden is being planned and worked over in the forthcoming weeks. We've a lovely new cultivator to aid our efforts this year. Visions of heirloom tomatoes, curled squash and cucumber vines, cheery pea shoots, and stately melons gracing the tidy rows of the Garden are dancing in my head already. The Pond's surrounds are being given over to pretty little herbs (the spray from the fountain will help them stay watered and happy).
In the air...in the warm rays of the sun...in the moist scent of turned soil...can't you hear and feel and smell the potential?! She's beckoning us all. Go out and indulge in the magick and wonderment of the world coming back to vitality!

Gearing Up for the Impending Storm
04 November 2013
Ch--Ch--Changes They are Afoot...
One may truly feel the Wheel turning today--the winds are brisk, the air is crisp and redolent with Autumnal scents of wet leaves and wood smoke, and the skies have turned grim. The trees, recently decked in verdant leaves, are shedding their finery and allowing their skeletal beauty to be fully displayed. Winter is fast approaching and, with it, the season of resting, reflection, and recharging. We may become self-absorbed or self-isolating, but 'tis merely a chance for the introspective self to strengthen and reawaken.
As with the critters without, we, too, are starting the comforting ritual of preparations for the coming "nesting" season. Kitchens are teeming with the scents of baking breads, warming soups, and roasting meats. Blankets and "throws" are being brought out of storage and tossed on sofas and chairs for easy access when the evenings are chilly. Handknits and jumpers have replaced tshirts and tank tops in closets and bureaus.
There's an anticipation in the air...in the crystal-blue skies...in the scents and sounds of preparation. Change is coming and change is here! Candles are lit for ritual AND for light...bonfires or firepits pop and crackle merrily in celebration as they warm and comfort...capes and cloaks and ritual garb comforts as much as it connects.
My dear visitors, what are WE embracing and altering in this Season of flux? Do we mourn the loss of the Sun or welcome the Darkness and all its potential? Will we hold fast to the past or look beyond to what we've learned and to what wonders are opened to us thanks to that very same past? Will we think ill of the brisk winds and chill rains and forthcoming snows or actively open to the cleansing they herald?
Change, my dear ones...change is what keeps our Paths vibrant and vital. Change is what allows us to delve ever deeper into Her mysteries. Change is life!
Embrace it...go out-of-doors and embrace the change!

Gearing up for Samhain 2013
It's true that we Followers of the Path and Dancers in the Moonlight are seen by the media and general public as something "dark," "evil," and oftimes "damned." But, what do we DO to change that conception? Do we talk openly or hide in the shadows and hope (hehe..."like Hell") that we don't get noticed? Do we live our lives IN society or perpetually separate and self-exclude? Are we Wiccans/Witches OF the world or IN the world?
Most of us--because of the very images by which McCaskill is offended--stay in our "broom closet" for fear of separation or exclusion. It's a self-fulfilling action. If we hide--TRULY hide--who we are, aren't we as guilty as the drug store decorations of perpetuating the negative stereotype by acting like our Path is something to be ashamed of or secreted away?
One of my dearest friends "broke" the unwritten/unspoken "code" and "outed" me to one of our mutual friends. She knew no better and meant absolutely no harm...and know what happened? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING--either negative OR positive. It was a situationally-neutral action. Life kept on going...
Albeit I'm not advocating in ANY MANNER for any of us to shout to the highest hillocks that we are Pagan and Proud or any such nonsense--our families or careers may still dictate otherwise--I AM advocating adjusting the stereotypes by answering questions with candor and honesty. If something offends, educate. If someone asks, answer.
And make it a bit easier this Thursday to welcome and embrace the Old Ones as the Veil is lifted.

Late Spring's Magickal Offerings
Did you sense it in the breeze today? The clear, clean scent of Spring's promise...the dewy offering of life and regeneration...the crisp embrace of the Season? Songbirds are softly chirruping their salute to Aurora. The cool air smells of rain. The leafed trees are sparkling against the steely-grey skies.
Rain. That life-giving offering is imminently approaching. Preliminary mists kiss the skin if you're out-of-doors. As "gloomy" as the profane world might see a day such as this, to the Lair, it's a day of heightened awareness...of activity...of celebration. The Gardens are beginning to produce--thanks to the rains. The Fig is quivering with new fruits--thanks to the rains. The darling Toads of the Pond are socializing during the day AND evening--thanks to the rains.
Embrace this day...this weather...this Season! We're less than a cycle from Midsummer's Eve and the festal celebration of Litha. The Fae are galavanting in the Gardens, meadows, and woodlands. The Elementals are at play in our nightly rituals and Sabbat/Esbat circles. Engage them all...celebrate with them...dance, twirl, jump about, and open to the promise!
Merely a gentle reminder, my dear ones, to focus not solely on the fundamentals, but on the FUN of this Season. We are celebratory Paths...so celebrate!

Beltane 2013
Step outside--can't you feel it? The warmth of the Sun's embrace growing ever more lengthy and sustaining. The bracing texture of new grass as it tickles beneath your barefoot steps. The gentle kiss of the Spring breezes sensually stroking your cheek ever so softly. The chirrups of wild birds calling you ever onward to the world beyond the walls of your comforting home.
The 19th century poet--Willam Wordsworth--embraced Nature in this manner. His were poems which captured the essence of Nature and the Simple Life as indicative of the ideal state of Mankind. I'm reminded of his "Lines Composed in Early Spring" today:
I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.
To her fair works did nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.
Through primrose tufts, in that sweet bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And 'tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.
The birds around me hopped and played:
Their thoughts I cannot measure,
But the least motion which they made,
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.
The budding twigs spread out their fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That there was pleasure there.
If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature's holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?

Today--and throughout this season of mirth and merriment--embrace the hope and welcome which Spring and Nature offer you. Celebrate good...welcome change...embrace diversity. Plainly said, let Her wisdom penetrate your deepest recesses and allow you to open to the Thrill of Living!

WELCOME 2013!
We've decked the halls, burned the Yule log, torn the wrapping paper from gifts, popped the Champagne, and cleaned up from the parties. So...now what?
My darling Lair companions, it's now time (as it always is) to celebrate the seasonal abundance of Winter! Look around you...
Here, at the Lair, the trees are brazenly exposing their architecturally minimalist natures, the Pond is glazed every morning with a thin layer of glassy ice, and the songbird are "decking the Gardens" with shades of charcoal and scarlet. We've been blessed with rains, snow, ice, AND bright winter sunshine within the past two weeks! The bracing winds and temperamental weather outside encourage us to "nest" and cuddle. It's a time of organization and introspection--of cleaning our environment of the "needless detritus collected and unused AND of cleaning our selves of those considerations that draw us from our "real" purpose and focus.
Rather than make resolutions, I encourage you to Refocus and Renew this season...to look within and find what needs Renovating...to Resuscitate your true self. Extract yourself from the negative energies--acknowledge their ability to teach and then embrace the positive motivation they give you to adapt and change.
Welcome to 2013, my dear ones...and to the softness of THIS year's Moonlight...

In Dark Silence come Whisperings of New Beginnings...
Tonight, when the sun sinks low in the Western sky and the light softens to a violet, our celebrations and observances of the Dark Half begin. Hearth fires will be extinguished and new fire will be kindled. Many of us will dance 'round the bonfires (for the dwellers at the Lair, it's a firepit) as we commune with the Spirits. Within the "death" honored tonight is also the promise of renewal.
The veil is thinnest tonight--our ancestors return to impart their Wisdom to us as seed is spread prior to germinating. The planting commences for them...but will be reap a Harvest of knowledge or insight? 'Tis ours to tend, to nurture, and to gather.
Listen intently...let your focus soften and your awareness sharpen. Do you hear them? Do you feel the soft breeze of their whisper at your ear? Do you feel the draw?
Blessed Samhain, my friends. Bright blessings to you all!
